“Jolt ’N’ Joe’s downtown canceled all entertainment, which included every band night and a comedy night,” says Lenny Morris of his now-defunct residency at that venue every other Wednesday. “It was a real surprise. I was working with them to get music, comedy, and other events up and running. The first show we did there had a
great turnout. The two in December were a little lighter.”
According to Morris, “I didn’t get to have a direct conversation with the owner. Rather, I just received a call from the entertainment director the night before my showcase, stating the owner is canceling all entertainment.... His reason was he didn’t have any money to pay the bands. It was a shame, as I had to cancel over 15 acts for my showcases. I can’t imagine what their overhead must be with a 15,000-square-foot space on Fourth Avenue. I just wish it was being utilized properly.” Venue operators have not responded...
Do the phrases “hard working” and “living the dream” go together? For some lucky ones, they actually do.
Lenny Morris is one of the hardest working musicians around town, but to him, working hard at what you love is not work at all. He’s your average guy really; the football fan, poker playing, guitar strumming, Star Wars and video game dude. Raised by a single mother, Lenny never really knew his father, other than a brief phone call in his late teens when he found out his dad was
living on the streets. Lenny played over 100 shows last year alone, and still gets nervous a little each time he plays. No more fries for Lenny Morris, he’s got a knack for the music biz. “I’ve managed to generate a very sustainable income in less than a year as a full-time musician,” says singer/songwriter Lenny Morris, “playing three to four shows a week for private events, upscale restaurants, and wine bistros.”
